Our Generation Portfolio

Etana Energy is rapidly scaling our generation portfolio to provide South African businesses with cost-competitive renewable energy that covers most of their electricity demand. We already have a hydroelectric power facility in operation wheeling energy across the grid. We also have more than 500MW of renewable energy capacity in construction, spanning two wind farms and two solar PV projects. Etana’s wind-heavy generation portfolio provides customers with round-the-clock renewable energy supply.

Boston Hydroelectric Plant

The Boston Hydroelectric Plant achieved commercial operation in October 2025 and supplies 24/7 baseload renewable electricity to Growthpoint through Etana Energy’s trading platform. The plant will generate approximately 30GWh of electricity annually, with an expected operational lifetime of more than 40 years.

The project forms part of Etana’s renewable portfolio supplying Growthpoint Properties and its tenants through Growthpoint’s eco₂ programme. It supplies part of the 195GWh of renewable electricity that Growthpoint has committed to purchase annually from Etana.

Technology: Run-of-river hydroelectric power
Capacity: 5MW
Location: Ash River (part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Scheme) near Clarens, Free State
Status: Operational
Project partners: Developed and operated by Serengeti Energy, with Growthpoint Properties holding a 30% stake.

Du Plessis Dam Solar PV2

The Du Plessis Dam Solar PV2 project was Etana Energy’s first solar project as an offtaker and a key milestone in scaling the company’s renewable generation portfolio.

The project reached financial close in March 2025. Construction began in April 2025 and is set to start supplying electricity to Etana’s customers through its trading platform in 2026.

Du Plessis Dam PV2 is also the first project to utilise Etana’s R2.8 billion payment guarantee facility, unlocked through guarantees issued by Standard Bank, British Internal Investment (BII) and GuarantCo. This guarantee structure enables the bankability of renewable projects developed specifically for offtake by large electricity users through a trader.

Technology: Solar PV
Installed capacity: 105MW
Export Capacity: 75MW
Location: Near De Aar, Northern Cape
Status: In construction
Project partners: Codeveloped and owned by Mulilo and H1 Holdings.

Zen and Bergrivier Wind Farms

The Zen and Bergrivier wind farms provide significant wind capacity to Etana’s trading platform.

The projects reached financial close in December 2026, with commissioning expected in mid-2027. Once operational, they will supply Etana with approximately 580GWh of renewable electricity annually under a 20-year agreement.

Wind generation plays a critical role in complementing solar production by delivering electricity during high-value evening and early-morning periods, improving the overall supply profile available to businesses and resilience to future market and tariff changes.

Technology: Wind power
Installed capacity: Zen (100MW) and Bergrivier (94MW)
Export capacity: Combined 190MW
Location: Between Gouda and Saron, Western Cape
Status: In construction
Project partners: Developed and majority-owned (51%) by ACCIONA Energía, with H1 Capital and Chariot Limited the minority shareholders (49%).

Orkney Solar Project

The Orkney Solar Project is the largest solar facility supplying Etana’s trading platform.

The project achieved financial close in February 2026 and is expected to come online late 2027. Once operational, it is expected to produce around 478GWh of renewable electricity annually.

This was the second project that achieved financial close between Etana Energy and Mulilo in less than 12 months and is a testament to the speed that can be achieved through partnership.

Technology: Utility-scale solar PV
Installed capacity: 219MW
Export capacity: 150MW
Location: Near Orkney, North West Province
Status: In construction
Project partners: Developed and owned by Mulilo and partners
